The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz announces the opening of CAMPSITE, the 2016 edition of the museum’s annual Hudson Valley Artists series, presenting new works by 14 artists from throughout the region.
The show is curated by Corinna Ripps Schaming, associate director and curator at the University at Albany Art Museum. CAMPSITE will run from Sat., June 18 through Sun., Nov. 13 in the Dorsky Museum’s Alice and Horace Chandler and North Galleries.
A public opening reception will be held at the museum on Saturday, June 25, from 5–7 p.m. The reception will be preceded by a live music and video performance by Black Lake, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
CAMPSITE: Hudson Valley Artists 2016 draws inspiration from the traditions, rituals and aesthetics associated with the region’s rich history of summer camps. From tent grounds to sleepaway camps to pleasure resorts, these sites conjure up the promise of new adventures, diversions, libidinal pursuits and unfettered experimentation. Summer camp can be an escape, a state of mind or a metaphor by which to confront the emotional longings and dislocations of daily life.
Moving freely across artistic disciplines and mediums including performance, textiles, painting, drawing, installation, video and photography, CAMPSITE promises to transform the museum space into a locus of visual pleasures and unexpected activities, where playful exploration leads to more serious engagement with the larger world.
The 14 participating artists, selected from over 170 submissions, are: Jessica Baker, Black Lake (Susan Jennings and Slink Moss), Elizabeth Ennis, Tara Fracalossi, Chris Freeman, Laura Kaufman, Thomas Lail, Meg Lipke, Michael Covello Odalla, Ruby Palmer, Jeff Starr, Amy Talluto, Katharine Umsted and Chris Victor.
The Hudson Valley Artists exhibition accepts submissions from emerging and mid-career artists with permanent mailing addresses and active art practices in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties, who have not had a major one-person museum exhibition and who do not have commercial gallery representation.
For the seventh year, the Hudson Valley Artists Annual Purchase Award of $3,000 will be used to acquire one or more artworks from the exhibition for the museum’s permanent collection. This Purchase Award is made possible through the Alice and Horace Chandler Art Acquisition Fund.
ABOUT THE CURATOR
Corinna Ripps Schaming is Associate Director and Curator at the University at Albany Art Museum. Over the past 15 years, she has organized more than 80 exhibitions at the University Art Museum, as well as other venues including the Boulevard Project Space in Albany, N.Y., which she founded and directed for three years. She has organized solo shows for artists including Steve DiBenedetto, Keltie Ferris, Phil Frost, Rachel Foullon, Kate Gilmore, Dana Hoey, William Lamson, Judith Linhares, Suzanne McClelland, Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, Jason Middlebrook, Lamar Peterson, Michelle Segre, James Siena and Brian Tolle. Her exhibitions include: The Ties That Bind: Artists and Archives (2015), American Playlist: Selections from The University at Albany Art Collections (2014), Day After Day: The Diaristic Impulse (2013), Material Occupation (2012), Courier (2011), Uncharted (2009) and The Space Between Us (2006).

Through its collections, exhibitions and public programs, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz supports and enriches academic programs at the College, presents a broad range of world art for study and enjoyment and serves as a center for Hudson Valley arts and culture.
