College mourns the passing of former professor

It is with great sadness that the College shares the news of the passing of Dr. Evan Littlefield, former professor (Mathematics). He was 90.

Littlefield enlisted in the Navy during World War II, where he served as a reconnaissance pilot, and returned to enroll in Middlebury College. There, he earned a degree in math and physics and went on to earn a master’s degree from Harvard University.

Littlefield taught math and science for many years at the high school level, and became math department chair at Goshen High School in Goshen, N.Y. After earning his doctorate from SUNY Albany, he taught math at SUNY New Paltz and worked in the math teacher training program.

Upon his retirement, Littlefield and his wife, Sally, shared time between Vermont and Florida. They traveled extensively internationally, and volunteered at local courthouses, at the Lake Champlain Restoration Association and for political causes. Littlfield also  acted as treasurer for the Goshen Methodist Church and served as president of the New York State Math Teachers’ Association.

He is survived by two children: Gail Littlefield Doeberl and Gary Littlefield; four grandchildren; one great grandson; a sister, Jean; and a niece.
