SUNY New Paltz adjunct professor receives Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching

Joan Barker, adjunct professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz, has been named a recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching, which recognizes consistently superior teaching at the graduate, undergraduate, or professional level.

“Adjunct teachers are a key component of the SUNY faculty, providing top-quality instruction and making an important contribution to academic success and degree completion among students,” said Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “Those honored with our inaugural awards today are truly the best of the best, having demonstrated extraordinary dedication to their students and an exceptional commitment to teaching excellence. Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees.”

Barker, who has been teaching at SUNY New Paltz since 1994, is an award-winning artist. Her photographs and paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the country and overseas, including the Photographers’ Gallery in London, Photohozos in Athens, and the Internationale Fotoage Herten in Germany.

She is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowship, The Village Voice Photography Grant, and two Center for Photography at Woodstock Fellowships.

Barker earned a Master of Fine Arts in photography at the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1994. She currently resides in New Paltz with her husband, Dennis Moore.

The Awards are presented annually in seven categories: Faculty Service, Librarianship, Professional Service, Scholarship and Creative Activities, Teaching, Classified Service, and new this year – Adjunct Teaching.

The Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence are System-level honors conferred to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence. These programs underscore SUNY’s commitment to sustaining intellectual vibrancy, advancing the boundaries of knowledge, providing the highest quality of instruction, and serving the public good. Through these awards, SUNY publicly proclaims its pride in the accomplishment and personal dedication of its instructional faculty, librarians, and professional staff across its campuses.

Individuals selected for this honor are role models within the SUNY community. In acknowledgment of their selection, recipients are given recognition for the particular award received in the college catalogue by the addition of the phrase “State University Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in …” A certificate and a Chancellor’s Excellence Medallion are also bestowed to commemorate selection. In addition, campuses are encouraged to supplement these commemoratives as appropriate to campus resources. Frequently, those selected are honored by their campuses during commencement, at academic convocations, or at special events hosted in honor of their selection.
