Hawks Fly by Brockport

NEW PALTZ, NY- Five Hawk players score in double-figures and three had double-doubles to help the Hawks defeat the Golden Eagles from Brockport, 83-74 Friday night in the Hawks Center. The Hawks withstood a late run by the Eagles to improve to 11-9 overall and 7-6 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks out rebounded Brockport 46-25 in the game and shot 65 percent from the floor, including 67 percent from behind the arc.

Harris Wichard led the Hawks with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc and 10 boards. Shereef Taylor added 17 points, 10 boards, five assists and two steals and Jayquan Anderson chipped in with 14 points and a game-high 11 boards. Matt Devine and Nick Taldi each scored 13 points. Oppong Agyemang had a game-high seven assists in only 19 minutes of play.

Jermaine Johnson led four double-figure scorers with 18 points, five boards and four steals while Derek netted 14 points, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Brandon Williams and Gerald Williams each had 13 points a piece for Brockport who falls to 14-6 overall and 10-3 in the SUNYAC.

With the scored tied at 7-7 after four minutes of play, the Hawks went on a 15-0 run over the next five and half minutes, led by Devine with eight points in the spurt. The Hawk continued to push their led to as many as 17 on a Wichard three-pointer from the corner. Brockport came back with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 11 with six minutes, six seconds remaining. The Hawks would build the lead back up to 16 with just over four minutes to go in the half, but Brockport finished the half on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 36-27 at the break. The Hawks outscored the Golden Eagles 19-10 in the paint and held a 10-4 advantage in fast break points. The bench played well in the half as they outscored Brockport’s bench 14-8, led by Devine with eight.

The second half, the Taylor hit a three-pointer to open, but Klein answered right back with a three of his own. The Hawks stayed strong and went on a 16-5 run over the next four and half minutes to take a commanding 55-35 lead with 13 minutes, 46 seconds remaining in the game. Brockport answered with a 10-0 in at three minute span, but Dan Olsen’s lay-up ended the run. Brockport was able to cut the lead to four with three minutes, 23 seconds to go, but the Hawks did not fade as they scored six straight on an Anderson lay-up and a slam from Taylor. The Hawks outscored Brockport 26-20 in the paint and 11-6 on fast break points for the second half.
