Hawks Clip Golden Eagles
NEW PALTZ, NY– The New Paltz women’s basketball team defeated the visiting Golden Eagles from Brockport, Friday night 69-53. The Hawks improve to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the league and Brockport falls to 4-16 overall and 2-11 in the league.
Carly Minehan led the Hawks with 15 points and Caitlin Irwin netted 14 points and added two steals. Maliqua Fisher and Alexandra McCullough added eight points each and grabbed five rebounds apiece.
Whitney Smith led her team with 19 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Brockport struggled putting some points on the board going 0-5 from behind the arc in the first half.
The Golden Eagles kept up with the Hawks until five minutes were left in the first half. The Hawks had a four point lead with 5:01 remaining and ended up going on a 7-0 run, taking the lead by 11 points at halftime. Fisher started the run with a jumper, Nicole Sarcone’s tough defense got her two clutch layups. Caitlin Irwin’s three pointer with three seconds to go in the half gave the Hawks their double-digit advantage.
The Hawks carried their momentum into the second half and did not look back. Right out of the gate the Hawks went on a 16-5 run which led them to dominate the contest. Minehan first scored with a short jumper, Sarcone took advantage of the Golden Eagles turnover by hitting a three-pointer. Minutes later, Caitlin Irwin gave the Hawks an 18 point lead hitting a key three-pointer to give the Hawks some comfort. The Hawks shot 52% from the floor in the second half.
The Hawks return to the court tomorrow as they take on the visiting Blue Knights from Geneseo, tip off is set for 2:00 pm.
