Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Elms; Falls to #14 MIT

NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz men’s volleyball team opened the New Paltz Hawks Tournament with a straight set win over Elms College, 3-0 (30-15, 30-12, 30-22) but would fall to #14 MIT, 3-0 (30-25, 32-30, 30-28). The Hawks overall record stands at 2-1 and will return to the court tomorrow to finish up the tournament at 10 a.m. against Emmanuel and 2 p.m. against #10 Baruch.

In the Elms match, Kevin Stross led all attackers with 13 kills with an outstanding .867 hitting percentage and Sean Foley added 10 kills. Jake Moore had eight kills with a .417 hitting percentage and Dan Liberto and Mike Van Tyne each had five kills a piece. Frank Ciccone handed out 22 assists and Andrew Cassius had 13 assists.

Elms had three players, Juan Carlos Salmeron, Stephan Cameron and Wilfrido Fermin with three kills a piece. Mike Martin handed out 11 assists and had three digs. Elms College falls to 1-3 overall.

In the MIT game, Mike Demyttenaere led all players with 18 kills and Matt Hohenberger had 17. Garrett Winther added 13 kills and Tim Lee handed out a game-high 48 assists.

The Hawks would led by Moore with 16 kills with a .429 hitting percentage, four blocks and six digs. Liberto chipped in with 12 kills and Stross added seven for the Hawks.
