Hawks Down Roger Williams In Straight Sets

NEW YORK, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team continued their success with a straight victory over Roger Williams University by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-11. The Hawks set the school record with their 33rd win of the season (33-5 overall) and have won 23 straight games and 31 of their last 32 overall.

Senior Brittany Coyle (Middletown/Minisink Valley) paced the Hawks with a game high 11 kills and had a .556 hitting percentage with three blocks. Sophomore Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead/West Hempstead) added eight kills and 10 digs on defense. Senior setter Stephanie Bova (Central Square/Paul V. Moore) had a game-high 27 assists and nine digs for the Hawks. Junior Dana Kindelmann (Nesconset/Sachem North) had five kills and hit .625 with two blocks. Sophomore Loren Crabbe (Ballston Lake/Burnt Hills) led the defense with 16 digs and senior Priska Wilson (Warwick/Warwick Valley) chipped in with 10 digs.

In the first set, the teams battled point for point before the Hawks finished the set on a run to take the early 1-0 advantage. DiGiovanna and Coyle led the Hawks with four kills in the set and senior Alison Kiernan (New Hyde Park/Herricks) and Kindelmann each added three kills a piece.

In the second set, both teams battled to a 6-6 tie before the Hawks went on a 13-6 run to take control of the set. Coyle paced the Hawks with five kills and two blocks in the set and Bova handed out eight assists.

In the third and final set, the Hawks opened with a 20-4 run and never looked back from there, dominating the third set. The Hawks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Regional’s against Salisbury University tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. in the Coles Sports Complex on the campus of New York University.
