Field Hockey Season Recap

NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz field hockey team posted an 8-11 overall record and 2-4 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks posted five more wins than a year ago and moved from seventh to fourth in the SUNYAC standings. It is the most wins for the program since the 2004 season when the team was 8-12. The Hawks lost seven times by one goal four of which came in the extra session.

The Hawks played #6 Cortland to a 5-3 loss as their comeback fell short and played #19 Stevens to a 2-1 overtime loss. Other one goal losses came against Union, Endicott, Montclair St., Oneonta, Morrisville St. and Kean. The Hawks defeated Oswego and Brockport for the first time since the 2007 season.

Junior forward Sarah Schloss led the team in points with 13 goals and 10 assists. Senior forward Kristen Bergmann was second with 13 goals and six assists. Sophomore forward Stacey Miller added eight goals and junior defender Alyssa Finck was second on the team with seven assists.

Senior Ann Marie Rudd started all 19 games for the Hawks and tallied a team-high three defensive saves. Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Tong was 7-7 in net this season with two shutouts and had a 1.78 goals against average with 64 saves.

Schloss earned First Team All-SUNYAC for forwards and junior Caitlin Ryder earned First Team All-SUNYAC for midfielders. Rudd earned Second Team All-SUNYAC for defenders. Schloss also earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) North Atlantic Region Second Team.

“I want us to continue to play at a competitive level. I am looking for our returners to lead the team and set the pace for the freshman class” said first year head coach Shanna Vitale.
