Demarzo’s Late Goal Gives Hawks Victory

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team defeated visiting Vassar College Wednesday evening, 1-0 on Alumni Field.

In the 15th minute, the Hawks Samantha Abravanel (Islip) dribbled down the sideline and cut back to the middle of the field and her shot hit the crossbar.

Vassar’s Rachel Shea (West Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford) in the 27th minute sent a through ball to Alix Zongrone (Greenville, SC/Dorman), but Hawks goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside/Baldwin) was there to clear the ball away to avoid damage.  Minutes later, the Hawks Maggie Vasconi (Staten Island/Curtis) shot just went wide left of the post, as the Brewers dodged another chance by the Hawks.

Emily Buckner (Pine Bush) struck a shot from the left side of the box, but the Brewers goalkeeper made a diving save to keep the game scoreless with 12 minutes to go in the first half.

The Brewers had two chances in the 37th minute when Carolyn Demougeot shot to the upper left corner was saved by Vega.  Seconds later, Keiko Kurita (Scotts Valley, CA/Santa Cruz) shot from 20 yards out to the upper left corner was once again denied by Vega.

With one minute left, Sarah Demarzo (Mahopac) free kick to the lower left corner was pushed away by the diving Brewers goalkeeper to keep the game scoreless at the half.
