St. Joe’s (LI) defeats the Hawks in doubleheader
NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz baseball team hosted non-conference St. Joe’s (LI) Saturday afternoon on Loren Campbell Field. The Hawks fell to the Golden Eagles in game one 9-3 and in game two 12-4.
In game one, senior Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) was 2-for-3 with one RBI and freshman Chris Paulicelli (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Golden Eagles Jeff Coyle was 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI’s to lead St. Joe’s. Matt Timmons was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI’s and Ryan Carroll was 1-for-3 and two RBI’s.
Jeff Coyle gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homerun, but a single by Terlecky scored Paulicelli from second to cut the lead to 2-1 after the first. The Hawks would later tie the game in the third when freshman Paul Merola (Cornwall oh-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) attempted to steal second, but was caught in a run down that allowed Paulicelli to score.
The Golden Eagles would take the lead back in the fourth scoring five runs. Jeff Coyle hit his second two-run homer of the game which game St. Joe’s a 7-2 lead. The Hawks would score one in the bottom half of the inning on a wild pitch that junior Clinton Boettcher (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) scored on after leading the inning off with a double.
Ron Eichhorn earned the victory on the mound for the Golden Eagles pitching the complete game, allowing three runs on six hits, walking three and striking out eight.
Senior Jimmy Donohue (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) allowed seven runs (6 ER) on six hits and striking out one in three and a third innings for the loss. Junior Tristan Greene (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) pitched the final three and two third innings allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three.
In the nightcap, St. Joe’s jumped out early again scoring two in the first and one in third for the 3-0 advantage. The Hawks would cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Paulicelli that scored freshman Philip Parker (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) to cut the lead to 3-1.
St. Joe’s would score two in the fourth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh to take a 12-1 lead. The Hawks would score three in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman pinch-hitter Alex Donatelli (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) tallied his first ever collegiate hit in his first ever at-bat and would later score on an RBI groundout by Merola.
Freshman Mike Sherlock (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) led the Hawks from the plate going 2-for-3 with one run and Merola, Paulicelli, Terlecky, and Parker all had one hit apiece for the Hawks.
Ryan Carroll was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI’s and Mike Lanza was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s for the Golden Eagles. Jon Welsh went 3-for-4 with one run to help lead St. Joe’s to the victory.
Jason Dierkes recorded the win on the mound allowing four runs on seven hits striking out four and walking six in the complete game. St. Joe’s improves to 11-10 overall and 5-2 in the Skyline.
Sophomore Brett Harrison (Merrick, NY/Bellmore JFK) recorded the loss on the mound allowing five runs (3 ER) on six hits and striking out two in four innings. The Hawks fall to 7-17 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC.
The Hawk return to the field Monday April 13, against cross town rival Vassar at 4 p.m. on the campus of Vassar College.
