Homeruns by Dovi and Kelly not Enough as Softball Drops Two to Oneonta

The SUNY New Paltz softball team traveled to Oneonta Wednesday afternoon and fell to the Red Dragons 4-2 and 6-2. The Hawks drop to 13-17 on the season and 5-11 in conference play.
In the first game, first year Devon Kelly (Baldwin) and junior Rose Dovi (Cortland) each hit a homerun to lead the Hawks. Jenna Curcio (Conklin/Susquehanna Valley), Elizabeth May (Commack) and Melyssa Cilmi (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) each totaled one hit. Kelly took the loss on the mound as she allowed three runs on six hits.
In game one, New Paltz jumped ahead in the top of the second when Kelly hit her first collegiate homerun with one out to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Oneonta answered right back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single. The Hawks would retake the lead in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Dovi to make it 2-1 New Paltz before Oneonta tied it in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double. Oneonta took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring two runs on four hits and one New Paltz error.
In the nightcap, first year Samantha Barra (Islip) went 2-3 with an RBI to lead the offense and junior Justine Scutaro (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) went 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Dovi, Kelly, Dale Cornelius (Carle Place) and Tori Kyle (Staten Island/Curtis) each registered one hit for the Hawks. Sophomore Courtney Costello (Bayport/Bayport Blue Point) allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits in four and a third innings of work.
New Paltz took an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but Oneonta answered with a run in the bottom of the second before going ahead for good with two runs in the fourth. The Red Dragons added three more runs on four hits in the fifth for the final score.
The Hawks return home to host Morrisville on Friday at 3pm.
