Softball Sweeps Morrisville 11-0 and 8-3

The SUNY New Paltz softball team hosted Morrisville Friday afternoon and swept the Mustangs 11-0 and 8-3. The Hawks improve to 15-17 on the season and 7-11 in conference play.

In game one, junior Erin Fitzpatrick (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) went 2-3 with four RBI and two runs scored and junior Melyssa Cilmi (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) was 2-3 with two RBI. First year Devon Kelly (Baldwin) earned the win as she allowed only two hits with a career high seven strikeouts in five innings of work. The Hawks totaled nine hits, including five doubles, and left four runners on base.

New Paltz scored three runs with two outs in the second inning on two hits and one Morrisville error. With runners on second and third, Elizabeth May (Commack) hit an RBI double to center field. Cilmi hit a two run RBI double to left center before the Mustangs earned the final out.
The Hawks extended their lead in the third inning with five runs on four hits. Justine Scutaro (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) doubled to left field to start the inning and scored on an RBI single by Rose Dovi (Cortland) and Fitzpatrick hit a double to left field to score Kelly and Dovi. With two outs and runners on second and third, two unearned runs scored.
New Paltz completed the scoring in the fourth inning with three runs on two hits and two errors. Barra and Fitzpatrick each hit doubles as Barra, Scutaro and Tori Kyle (Staten Island/Curtis) each scored.

In game two, Jacqueline Masseo (Staten Island/Wagner) went 2-3 with three RBI and Sarah Palleschi (Chatham) and Victoria Holm (Floral Park) each went 1-2. Palleschi earned her first collegiate win on the mound as she allowed two hits with one run and two strikeouts in three innings of work. Courtney Costello (Bayport/Bayport Blue-Point) and Alyssa Oliva (Fishkill/John Jay) split the final four innings on the mound, combining for four strikeouts.

The Hawks took an early 1-0 lead when Barra hit an RBI single up the middle to score Kyle. New Paltz made it a 4-0 game in the second inning when Masseo hit and RBI double to score Holm before two unearned runs were tallied. Morrisville cut the lead to 3-1 in the third before the Hawks responded with a four run two out rally in the bottom of the inning. Palleschi tripled to center field; sending Holm and Cassie Barcavage (Cold Spring/Haldane) home. Palleschi then scored on a triple by Masseo to right field and she advanced home on the throw. The Mustangs added two runs in the fourth inning to complete the scoring.

New Paltz returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Oswego for a 1pm conference doubleheader.
