Hawks take game two; split with Oswego
OSWEGO, NY- The SUNY New Paltz baseball traveled to Oswego Saturday afternoon and was able to split with the Lakers. Oswego game one, 11-1 and the Hawks took the nightcap 7-2 to improve 9-19 overall and 3-5 in the SUNYAC.
Zack Eason led the Lakers from the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI’s. Mike Levy also was 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI to help lead Oswego in game one.
Freshman Paul Merola (Cornwall on-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) led the Hawks from the plate going 2-for-3 and senior pinch-hitter Jonathan Shanks (Millbrook, NY/Millbrook) had one hit in his only plate appearance.
In game one, Oswego took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Casey Rice. The Lakers would add six runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 10-0 advantage. The Lakers would add one more in the sixth. Senior Devin Scalabrini (Peekskill, NY/Mahopac) scored the lone run for the Hawks in the seventh after starting the inning off with a hit-by-pitch. Sophomore Michael Marash (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) doubled home Devin Scalabrini.
Marc Peterson recorded the win on the mound for the Lakers, pitching a complete game six hitter and allowing one run and striking out five.
Freshman Pat Sylvester (Garden City, NY/Garden City) took the loss on the mound allowing seven runs (6 ER) on six hits in three and two-third innings.
In the nightcap, the Hawks fell behind 2-0 in the second on a Wes O’Connor RBI single and a Bryan Stark sacrifice fly to left field. The Hawks would cut the lead in half with one in the third on freshman Mike Sherlock (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) double that scored Mike Marash.
The Hawks tied the game at 2-2 on junior Clinton Boettcher (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) sacrifice fly to right field that scored freshman Matt O’Neill (West Chester, PA/Henderson High). The Hawks took the lead 3-2, on freshman Alex Donatelli (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) RBI single. Mike Sherlock would extend the Hawks lead to 5-2 with a two-run single that scored Alex Donatelli and Michael Marash.
The Hawks would get two more insurance runs in the sixth on Clinton Boettcher’s second homerun of the year, scoring Devin Scalabrini after leading the inning off with a bit-by-pitch.
The Lakers were led by Mike Levy and Wes O’Connor from the plate with two hits apiece. Bryan Stark was 1-for-1 with a RBI and three walks.
Mike Sherlock was 2-for-5 with three RBI’s in the lead-off spot for the Hawks and Clinton Boettcher was 1-for-2 with one run and three RBI’s.
Dan Pecora recorded the loss on the mound for the Lakers, allowing seven runs (6 ER) on eight hits, walking four and striking out six over eight innings. Oswego improves to 11-9 overall and 1-7 in the SUNYAC.
Senior Jimmy Donohue (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) earned his second win of the season on the mound allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three in eight innings. Junior Tristan Greene (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) pitched the ninth and allowed just a walk to close out the game.
