Buffalo State defeats Hawks in women’s lacrosse
NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s lacrosse team fell to visiting Buffalo State, Saturday afternoon 21-6 on the Turf Field. The Bengals were led by Karen Shaddock with six goals and six assists and Katie Henderson tallied five goals and two assists on the afternoon.
Sophomore Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) led the Hawks with three goals and leads the team with 24 on the season. Freshman Sam DelGaudio (Northport, NY/Northport) tallied two goals and senior Jillian Carfarchio (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) added her second goal of the season.
The Bengals struck first just two minutes into the game when Kendyl Clarkson received the pass from Karen Shaddock to beat the Hawks goalkeeper for the early 1-0 advantage. The Hawks scored 40 second later when Sam DelGaudio beat the Bengals goalkeeper on a free-position shot to tie the contest. Just a minute later the Bengals regained the one goal lead when Kendyl Clarkson found Steph Georgopoulos for the goal. The Hawks would tie the game at 2-2 at 25:28 remaining when senior Sara Palazzolo (Lynbrook, NY/Malverne) found Hawks leading scorer Brittany Bennett for the goal.
The Bengals would pull away over the next four minutes as they scored four straight goals for the 6-2 advantage. Jillian Carfarchio ended an eight minute scoring drought with the goal on a free-position shot. The Bengals would stretch their lead to six, 9-3, with 14:40 left with goals from Katie Henderson, Marilyn Kush and Mariah DeBolt.
Brittany Bennett would score two straight goals to cut the lead to 9-5 with 6:40 remaining. The Bengals would score three goals over the last four minutes to take a 12-5 half-time advantage.
The Bengals opened the second half scoring three goals over a six minute period to take a commanding 15-5 lead. Sam DelGaudio scored the lone goal in the second half for the Hawks with 22:02 remaining. Buffalo State would score six goals over the last 20 minutes for the 21-6 victory over the Hawks.
Buffalo State goalie Ashley O’Brien made four saves and allowed six goals for the win in net. The Bengals improve to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the SUNYAC.
Senior Lorraine Vultaggio (Babylon, NY/Miller Place) recorded the loss in net allowing 21 goals and saving 11. New Paltz falls to 2-9 overall and 0-6 in the SUNYAC.
The Hawks return to the field Tuesday, April 21 at 3 p.m. against conference opponent Oswego at the Turf Field on the campus of SUNY New Paltz.
