NEW PALTZ – A scholarship for education students at the State University of New York at New Paltz has been created in honor of alumna Freda Heinz.
Freda graduated from the college (then known as the New Paltz Normal School) in 1930 and went on to become a teacher. She often returned to the college with her husband and attended many reunions, including one in 2000. Freda Heinz died in 2002.
“This is truly a wonderful example of the full-circle nature of excellent teaching,” said L. David Eaton, vice president of enrollment management. “Nearly 80 years ago, Freda Heinz’s professors gave her the skills to teach and instilled in her a deep appreciation and lifelong commitment to education, which manifests itself in a gift that will provide opportunity to a new generation of educators who will develop their skills at New Paltz.”
The scholarship was established by Freda’s husband, Oscar Heinz, who died in 2005. It was his wish that a renewable, recruitment scholarship be created in his wife’s memory to support students pursuing an education degree. In his will, Heinz bequeathed more than $175,000 to the SUNY New Paltz Foundation for an endowment. The income earned from that permanent investment will be used to provide funding for the scholarship.
