St. Mary’s takes two from Hawks

PHOENIX, AZ- The SUNY New Paltz baseball team fell in both games to St. Mary’s University in Minnesota, 11-10 in game one and 6-2 in the night cap.

In game one, St. Mary’s scored three in the bottom half of the first, but the Hawks responded with five runs in the top half of the second to take a 5-3 lead.  St. Mary’s would regain the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs and would increase the lead to 8-5 with two in the bottom of the fourth.  In the top of the sixth, the Hawks took the lead again scoring five runs to take a 10-8 lead.  St. Mary’s scored three in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 11-10.

Freshman Matt O’Neill (West Chester, PA, West Chester Henderson) was 3-for-3 from the plate, one run and two RBI’s.  Senior Devin Scalabrini (Peekskill, NY/Mahopac) was 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI and senior Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) was 2-for-5 with two RBI’s.   

Junior transfer Clinton Boettcher (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) recorded the loss on the mound giving up three runs on four hits over three innings and struck out three.  Starter John Giuliano (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) gave up eight runs on nine hits in three and two thirds innings and striking out three.  The Hawks fall to 0-3.

In the night cap, the Hawks fell behind 4-0 in the first inning but RBI hits by Terlecky and freshman Paul Merola (Cornwall on Hudson, NY/Cornwall) in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead in half at 4-2.  St. Mary would score two in the top half of the sixth for insurance runs and hold on for the victory 6-2.

Merola finished 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Terlecky continues his hot hitting with three hits in four at-bats with one RBI and has nine hits during his four game hitting streak. 

Freshman pitcher Timmy Chelius (Rockville Centre, NY/Southside) recorded the loss on the mound giving up six runs on 11 hits and two strikeouts for his first complete game of his short collegiate career.  The Hawks fall to 0-4 and return to the field Tuesday against Minot State from North Dakota for a double-header starting at 12 p.m.
