Hawks pick up first victory with a split against Minot State

PHOENIX, AZ- The SUNY New Paltz baseball team picked up their first win of the season against Minot State from North Dakota.  The Hawks dropped game one 5-4, but responded with 16 hits in a 10-3 victory.

In game one, the Hawks late rally was haltered by Brody Pinkerton.  Pinkerton came in relief for starting pitcher Jordan Martinson after just one inning of work by the starter.  Mike Sherlock (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI and senior Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) continued his hot hitting going 1-for-4 and extending his hitting streak to five games.  Senior Devin Scalabrini (Peekskill, NY/Mahopac) was 1-for-3 with two RBI’s and the Hawks fall to 0-5 on the season with the defeat.

Sophomore starting pitcher Eric Holzapple (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) went four innings allowing just one hit and striking out two.  He gave up two runs, none of which were earned.  Senior Jonathan Shanks (Millbrook, NY/Millbrook) recorded the loss and pitched the final three innings allowing three runs (1 ER) on five hits and striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Hawks stormed back with 16 hits and ten runs for the victory.  Terlecky was perfect from the plate going 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI’s.  He now extends his hitting streak to six games and is batting .560 for the year with ten RBI’s.  Freshman Paul Merola (Cornwall on Hudson, NY/Cornwall) was 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI’s and sophomores Mike Rich (Elmira, NY/Elmira) and Michael Marash (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) each was 2-for-4 from the plate.

Sophomore starting pitcher Brett Harrison (Merrick, NY/Bellmore JFK) earned the victory on the mound allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out two in the complete game victory.  The Hawk improve to 1-5 on the season and return tomorrow against Wisconsin-Stout.
