Hawks fall short in game two
PHOENIX, AZ- The SUNY New Paltz baseball team fell to Concordia (MN) 9-1 in game one and 7-6 in game two.
In game one, Concordia’s starting pitcher Scott Schumacher gave up only one run on one hit and striking out five for the complete game. Freshman Dan Cresci (Carmel, NY/Mahopac) provided the RBI single to score freshman Chris Paulicelli (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) in the bottom of the third to cut the Concordia lead to 2-1. For the first time in nine games senior Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) was held without a hit and his hitting streak ended at eight games. Concordia would score seven runs and four of them in the top of the seventh to take the victory.
Freshman pitcher Timmy Chelius (Rockville Centre, NY/Southside) gave up five runs on 11 hits and striking out two over six innings. Freshman Zach Russell (Clinton Corners, NY/Rhinebeck) gave up four runs (2 ER) on three hits in one inning of work for the Hawks. The Hawks fall to 2-7 on the season.
In game two, the Hawks fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second, but took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Concordia would take the lead right back scoring five in the bottom half of the inning. The Hawks would tie the score at six with two runs in the top of the fifth, to have Concordia score in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
Freshman Matt O’Neill (West Chester, PA/West Chester) led the Hawks from the plate going 2-for-3 with one run and 2 RBI’s and Terlecky was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Senior Jonathan Shanks (Millbrook, NY/Millbrook) went 1-for-3 with two RBI’s, but three costly errors lead to victory for Concordia.
Junior John Giuliano (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) allowed six runs (3 ER) on six hits in four innings of work and got the no decision. Junior Tristan Greene (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) recorded the loss on the mound allowing one run (0 ER), not giving up a hit and striking out two, but gave up six walks. The Hawks fall to 2-8 on the season and return to the field Saturday against nationally ranked (5) Eastern Connecticut for their final game in Arizona.
