Plattsburgh hands Hawks first loss in conference play

PLATTSBURGH, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team fell to host Plattsburgh 72-65, Saturday afternoon in Memorial Hall on the campus of SUNY Plattsburgh.

The Cardinals started the game on a 7-2 run in the first two minutes and added a 9-1 run from 12:40 to 10:26 remaining in the first half to take a 21-10 over the Hawks.  The Hawks responded with an 11-0 run at 8:45 to tie the contest at 21-21 with 6:10 remaining and helped the Hawks to a 34-33 half-time lead.

Junior guard Maggie Farrell (Hillsdale, NY/Immaculate) led the Hawks with 15 points and freshman guard Zoe Cohen (Brooklyn, NY/The Berkeley School) added five points and five rebounds.

The Cardinals Erin Silberberg had nine points and four rebounds and Taylor Amarando chipped in with six points.

The Cardinals started the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 43-34 and were able to push the lead to 13 points with 6:56 remaining in the game.  The Hawks were able to cut the lead to four, scoring nine straight points in one minute and thirty-four seconds. 

Farrell scored a game and career high 23 points, six rebounds and three assists and sophomore forward Artie Williams (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) had 15 points and three rebounds.  Junior forward Carly Minehan (Albany, NY/Albany) chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds in the Hawks efforts.

The Cardinals were led by Vanessa Arthurton with 20 points and ten rebounds.  Silberberg had 15 points and eight rebounds and Shoshana Harris scored 12 points and five rebounds.  Plattsburgh improves to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in SUNYAC competition.

With the defeat, the Hawks fall to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in SUNYAC competition.

The Hawks will return to the court January 28 at the Sports and Recreation Center on the campus of Staten Island at 7 p.m.
