Hawks Stand in Fourth Place at ECAC Championships

The men’s and women’s swim teams continued competition at the ECAC Championship meet on Saturday. After the morning session, both the men and the women stood in fourth place.

Senior Joelle Hopf posted the best finish of the day on Saturday with a second place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:28.19, one second off of first place. Sophomore Marissa Morris took third in the 200 yard backstroke (2:13.22), knocking seven seconds off her seed time, and Jessica Lester touched fourth (2:13.77). Christine Rieth swam a season best in the 100 freestyle as she finished third in 54.24, while Allison Wells captured eighth place in 55.64. Senior Erica Ellis captured seventh place in the 200 butterfly (2:18.84). Morris, Rieth, Lester and Wells teamed up for a third place finished in the 800 freestyle relay (7:56.96) setting a new varsity record. The old record was set in 2005 (8:04.83).

Sophomore Dave Gardner provided the best finish for the men with a third place finish in the 100 freestyle (47.87). Patrick Rathbun placed eighth in 48.58. First year Jesse Sweeney took seventh in the 200 backstroke as he broke the two minute mark for the first time this season in 1:59.33. Stephen Cozzolongo also broke two minutes as he took ninth (1:59.82). The men’s 800 free relay of Gardner, Rathbun, Rob Webb and Pete Nastasi finished fourth in 7:09.63, knocking 13 seconds off their seed time.
