Hawks overwhelm Fredonia, defeating the Blue Devils 86-64

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team defeated Fredonia, 86-64, Friday night in the Hawk Center.

In the first half, trailing 9-7, Artie Williams (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) hit a three-pointer to give the Hawks the one point lead, which in turn ignited the Hawks on a 13-0 in 1:21 seconds to take a 20-9 lead. Williams would lead the Hawks at the break with 13 points. Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) added eight points and Maggie Farrell (Hillsdale, NY/Immaculate) chipped in with seven points and three rebounds.

The defense of the Hawks forced 13 turnovers and Fredonia struggled from the free throw line going 1-of-7 for the half.

Fredonia was led by Merissa Gaeta with nine points and Angela Pucciarelli and Katie Landy each added eights points. The Hawks led 44-36 at the break.

In the second half, the Hawks started the first six minutes on 12-0 run to push the lead to 20 points, 56-36. The Hawks would then extend the lead to 31 points going on a 17-4 run that started with 8:02 remaining before a basket by Pucciarelli at 2:41.

The Hawks were led by Williams on the night with 23 points and five rebounds and Irwin chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds. Nicole Sarcone (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) added six points and dished out six assists for the Hawks on the night.

The Blue Devils were led by Landy with 17 points and eight rebounds and Pucciarelli added 15 points and four rebounds. Fredonia falls to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in SUNYAC competition.

The Hawks improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in SUNYAC competition.

The Hawks return to the court tomorrow against Buffalo State at 2 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
