Cassaro and Gentsch Lead New Paltz at Geneseo Invitational
The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s cross country team traveled to Geneseo to compete in the 28th Annual Geneseo Cross Country Invitational at Letchworth State Park.
On the women’s side the Hawks finished eighth with a team total of 234 points. SUNY Geneseo won the title with 25 points followed by Plattsburgh in second place with 81 points. The University of Rochester was third with 86 points, RIT placed fourth with 100 and Houghton College was fifth with 133.
Junior Lisa Cassaro (West Islip) led the Hawks with a time of 24:46 over six kilometers, improving her personal best by 14 seconds and placing her fourth on the SUNY New Paltz top times list. Sophomore Danielle Harmon (Pearl River) placed 43rd with a time of 25:02 and classmate Olga Stulov (Glenmont/Bethlehem) captured 65th place in 25:43. New Paltz’s scoring five included Stephanie Albinski (Commack), who was 76th in 26:01 and Sara Wenger (NYC/Beacon), who finished 84th in 26:17.
The men’s cross country team scored 300 points today to finished 10th out of 21 schools. Geneseo won the title with 36 points to second place Plattsburgh’s 91 points. The Geneseo Alumni team was third with 96 points, the University of Rochester was fourth with 108 points, Houghton placed fifth with 127 and Fredonia was sixth with 128.
Sophomore Joe Gentsch (Staten Island/Curtis) led the Hawks with a time of 26:56 to finish 39th overall and post the seventh fastest eight kilometer time in SUNY New Paltz history. Junior Nick Avello (West Sand Lake/Averill Park) was 62nd in 27:33, improving his personal best time by 42 seconds and first year Mike Zelensky (Waterford/Shenendehowa) finished in 28:49. New Paltz completed their scoring five with Dexter Larsen in 28:55 and Robert Webster in 29:49, knocking 28 seconds off his best time.
Both teams will compete at the Williams Invite on Saturday October 18th.
