SUNY New Paltz Men’s Soccer Holds off Fredonia

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team held off a late attack by Fredonia to hold on to the victory, 2-1 on a rainy Friday evening. It was the first win in the SUNYAC Conference this season and the Hawks first win over Fredonia since 2004.

The Hawks struck first in the 18th minute when freshman James Altadonna (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) scored his SUNYAC leading tenth goal on a header from a throw in pass by senior captain Chris Hotzak (Saint James, NY/Smithtown) to give the Hawks the 1-0 lead.

In the 76th minute Sean Reminick (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) caused a turnover deep in Fredonia’s defense and took a shot from the left corner of the 18 yard box and beat the goalie over his head, to give the Hawks to 2-0 advantage.

The Blue Devils cut the lead in half in the 77th minute when Peter Dagel touched passed to Jack Flechaus for the goal.

The Hawks played outstanding defense led by Anton Shipman (Howard Beach, NY/Molloy), Ryan Lundgren (Montgomery, NY/ Valley Central), Nick Lamon (Hewlett, NY/Hewlett) and Robert Mendes (Mineloa, NY/Wheatley) to hold off late attacks by Fredonia.

Patrick Carlucci (Goshen, NY/Goshen) made one save in goal for the win and help improve New Paltz to 4-3-2 overall and 1-1 in SUNYAC competition.

Tom Cavanaugh recorded the loss in goal tallying two saves. SUNY Fredonia falls to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in SUNYAC competition.

SUNY New Paltz returns to the field tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Buffalo State on the Turf Field on the New Paltz campus.
