Softball Sweeps Potsdam 9-0, 11-3

NEW PALTZ, NY — The softball team hosted Potsdam this afternoon in a SUNYAC doubleheader and swept the Bears 9-0, 11-3. New Paltz advances 14-14 on the season and 5-7 in conference play.
In game one New Paltz got the bats going in the third inning with three runs on four hits. Tori Kyle started with single and advanced to second on a single bunt by Mel Cilmi. Lauren Motzkin hit her ninth double of the season to advance all runners and score Kyle. Dale Cornelius hit a two run RBI single up the middle. The Hawks registered four hits and three runs in the fourth inning for the 6-0 lead. Amalia DiTrapani singled and moved to third on a double by Kyle. With bases loaded, Elizabeth May hit a two run RBI double to left field. Motzkin followed with an RBI single up the middle. The Hawks completed the game in the fifth inning. Erin Fitzpatrick started off with a homerun over the left field fence. With runners on second and third and one out, Cilmi hit a double to right center to bring in two runs and end the game.
Cilmi was 3-3 with two RBIs and two runs to lead the Hawks. Motzkin was 2-3 with two RBIs, while Kyle and DiTrapani each had two hits for New Paltz. Courtney Costello earned the win on the mound allowing three hits in five innings with no walks and two strikeouts.
In the second game Potsdam jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first before New Paltz responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Cilmi started with a walk and was hit home when Cornelius connected for a double with two outs. Justine Scutaro hit a single to bring in Cornelius for the 3-2 score. New Paltz took the lead in the third inning with two runs on two hits. Fitzpatrick singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Motzkin reached on an error, which brought Fitzpatrick home for the tying run. With a runner on third and one out, Cornelius grounded out to the shortstop to bring in the runner for the 4-3 lead. In the fourth inning, the Hawks registered seven runs on eight hits for the 11-3 lead.
Scutaro was 3-3 from the plate, with three RBIs and Cornelius was 2-3 with three RBIs to lead New Paltz. DiTrapani was 2-3 with two RBI was the Hawks totaled 12 hits and left three on base.Brittany O’Hara earned the win on the mound allowing, six hits three runs, two walk and striking out four batters.
New Paltz will return to action on Tuesday April 15th when they host Oswego at 3pm in a SUNYAC doubleheader.
