Softball Sweeps Geneseo 11-3, 5-4; Sets New Conference Win Record
GENESEO, NY — The softball team traveled to Geneseo this afternoon and swept the Blue Knights 11-3 and 5-4, setting a new record for conference wins in a season with 12. The Hawks broke the record of 10 conference wins in a season set in 2007.
In game one, Geneseo took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Hawks struck for five runs in the third inning, four of which were unearned, and then tacked on two more in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the contest with the eight-run mercy rule. Mel Cilmi, Lauren Motzkin, and Justine Scutaro each had three hits to lead the Hawks as Scutaro totaled four RBI. New Paltz out hit Geneseo 14-5 in the game. Courtney Costello earned the win in five innings, allowing three runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
In game two, Geneseo scored two unearned runs in the first inning before New Paltz scored a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Dale Cornelius to score Motzkin who doubled to start the inning. Geneseo reclaimed the the two run lead in the bottom of the inning on a solo homerun. The Hawks tied the game in the top of the sixth by loading the bases on three consecutive singles, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly and plating the tying run on a passed ball.
The game remained 3-3 until the top of the tenth inning. Liz Tong was placed at second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Cilmi. Elizabeth May hit an RBI double and moved to third on a ground-out and then scored on a passed ball for the 5-3 lead. Geneseo got an RBI single in the bottom of the inning but the Hawks defense held on for the 5-4 win.
Cornelius was 3-5 and May and Motzkin each added two hits. Brittany O’Hara earned the win allowing one run and one hit in the final 1.2 innings.
New Paltz completes their regular season schedule on Saturday when they travel to Brockport for an 11am doubleheader.
