Softball Splits with Fredonia Blue Devils
FREDONIA, NY — The softball team traveled to Fredonia on Sunday and claimed a 9-6 victory in game two of the SUNYAC doubleheader after dropping the first game 7-2. New Paltz advanced to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
In game one, Fredonia jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Trailing 6-0 after two innings, Erin Fitzpatrick hit a triple to start the third inning and was brought home on a single by Mel Cilmi. The Hawks scored their second run in the fourth inning when bases were loaded and Cilmi was walked to advance all runners. New Paltz totaled six hits and left 10 on base. Michelle Reinke took the loss on the mound allowing five hits and four runs.
In the second game, sophomore Justine Scutaro cracked a three-run homer in the top of the seventh for the win.
New Paltz took an early 5-0 lead before Fredonia rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth to tie the game. Each team scored a run in the fifth for a 6-6 tie, setting the stage for Scutaro’s homerun. With two outs Lauren Motzkin singled and advanced to second on a single by Dale Cornelius. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch before Scutaro nailed the game winning hit. Motzkin was 4-4 with three RBIs and Cornelius was 3-4 with two RBIs. Courtney Costello earned the win allowing three hits, one run and one walk in the final three innings.
New Paltz returns to action on Monday April 7th when they travel to Union at 3pm.
