Softball Spilts SUNYAC Twinbill with Buffalo State

BUFFALO, NY — SUNY New Paltz traveled to Buffalo today and split with the Buffalo State Bengals in a SUNYAC doubleheader. New Paltz won the opener, 7-4, but Buffalo State claimed the second game, 3-2.
In the opener, New Paltz exploded for four runs in the third inning including a two-run inside the park homerun by Dale Cornelius. Buffalo State cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning with a three-run blast. The Bengals tied the score when they managed a run in the bottom of the sixth, but New Paltz retaliated with a three-run seventh to claim the win. With runners on second and third, Cornelius hit a two run RBI double to right center. Cornelius scored on a single up the middle by Elizabeth May to complete the scoring.
Cornelius was 2-4 from the plate with five RBI to lead the Hawks. Lauren Motzkin, Amalia DiTrapani and Elizabeth May each had two hits for New Paltz as the team totaled 11 hits and left seven on base. Courtney Costello earned the win for the Hawks allowing four hits, one run, one walk and striking out four batters in 4.2 innings.
New Paltz jumped out to a lead again in the second game, scoring two runs in the second inning. DiTrapani singled and was hit home on a double by May, who advanced to third on a passed ball. Liz Tong brought May in for the 2-0 lead. The Bengals rallied with a run in the third and two more in the fifth to record the 3-2 victory. May was 2-3 from the plate as the Hawks totaled five hits. Brittany O’Hara took the loss on the mound allowing five hits, three runs and two walks in 3.1 innings.
New Paltz returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Fredonia for a doubleheader at 11am.
