Softball Drops Two to Cortland
NEW PALTZ, NY — The softball team opened SUNYAC play this afternoon and were swept by the Cortland Red Dragons 11-2, 3-1. The Hawks are 9-7 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
In game one, Cortland cruised to an 11-2 win as they started the game with five runs in the first inning. New Paltz posted both of their runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second, sophomore Justine Scutaro hit a two run RBI double to right center to score Erin Fitzpatrick and Dale Cornelius who were both walked earlier in the inning. The Red Dragons tallied two runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Scutaro registered the only two hits of the game for the Hawks as Cortland totaled 12 hits. Courtney Costello took the loss on the mound, allowing eight hits, seven runs, and three walks and the first three innings. Katie Finch earned the win for Cortland, throwing five innings and allowing two hits and striking out seven batters.
In the second game, Cortland took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before New Paltz scored their lone run in the fourth inning. Senior Amalia DiTrapani hit an RBI single to score Lauren Motzkin who started the inning with a double. The Red Dragons completed the scoring with the final run in the fifth inning.
DiTrapani was 2-3 from the plate as the Hawks tallied four hits and left three on base. Cortland collected 10 hits and left seven on base. Kelly O’Hea took the loss as she threw a complete game allowing 10 hits, three runs and struck out four batters. Cortland’s Diana Perez earned the win allowing four hits and one run in four innings.
New Paltz returns to action this weekend when they travel to Fredonia on Friday at 3pm and Buffalo State on Saturday at 1pm.
