Lila Downs

One of the most spellbinding voices to grace the world music scene. (Billboard)

The Mexican-American singer’s sound evokes the pulsing, vibrant rhythms of her home country’s rich folk-music legacy. (All Things Considered, NPR)

As hot as a habanero chili, Lila Downs even makes the cooking recipe of ‘La Cumbia del Mole’ sound lustful. (Chris Moss, BBC.CO/UK/music)

Latin Grammy-winner Lila Downs is a huge star in Mexico and, since performing along side Caetano Veloso at the Academy Awards, she has become just as popular in the U.S. Born in the state of Oaxaca to a Zapotec mother and American father, Downs studied music in the U.S. and then returned to Mexico to work with the indigenous women of Oaxaca. She started performing in the clubs of Oaxaca and writing music driven by civil rights and other social issues. Downs appeared as a character in "Frida," starring Salma Hayek, and wrote and performed several songs in the film.
