Baseball Spilts SUNYAC Opener with Plattsburgh

NEW PALTZ, NY — The baseball team opened SUNYAC play this afternoon with a split against Plattsburgh. New Paltz won game one 11-9 and lost 6-4 in the second game. The Hawks are currently 11-7 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
In game one, the Hawks claimed an 11-9 decision. New Paltz took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Joel Judson scored on a passed ball. Plattsburgh posted five runs and four hits in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead. New Paltz answered with five hits and five runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead at 6-1. Javy Lopez singled up the middle to start things for the Hawks. He advanced to second on a passed ball. Neal Rosengren was walked. Jesse Marsh followed with a double to left center to advance runners and score Lopez. Kevin Paino hit a sacrifice fly to score Rosengren. Judson hit an RBI single and Alex Cadmus singled. Devin Scalabrini was walked to load bases. Tyler Terlecky hit a two run RBI single up the middle.
Plattsburgh scored one run in the seventh to even the game at 6-6. New Paltz responded with four hits and five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take an 11-6 lead. Rosengren singled and advanced to second on an error. Paino hit an RBI single. With two outs and runners on second and third Scalabrini singled down the left line to score Paino. Terlecky hit is second two run RBI of the day with a single up the middle. With two outs and a runner on first and third, Chaputian stole second and with the over throw, Terlecky advanced home. Plattsburgh made things interesting in the ninth scoring three runs to cut the deficit to two runs. With bases loaded and two outs Jonathan Shanks retired the batter to end the game.
Terlecky was 4-5 from the plate with four RBIs and Joel Judson was 3-6 to lead the Hawks. New Paltz registered 14 hits and left 13 on base, while Plattsburgh totaled 10 hits and left 11 on base. Shanks earned the win on the mound allowing four runs, three hits and striking out four in the last three innings. Zachary Potter started the game and threw seven innings allowing five runs, seven hits and struck out six batters.
In game two, Plattsburgh tallied one run in the first and New Paltz answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Scalabrini hit the RBI single to score Paino. New Paltz totaled two hits and two runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Marsh singled up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on an error. With runners on second and third Cadmus hit a two run RBI. The Cardinals tacked on a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth for a 4-3 lead before New Paltz evened the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth. Scalabrini hit an RBI single to bring Paino home. Plattsburgh completed the scoring with a run in the sixth and the final run in the seventh for the 6-4 score.
Scalabrini was 2-3 with two RBI to lead the Hawks. Plattsburgh out-hit New Paltz 10-7. Jimmy Donohue took the loss on the mound allowing nine hits, six runs, three walks and striking out three batters.
New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday April 2nd when they host Vassar at 4pm.
