Women’s Basketball Stops Potsdam 74-56

NEW PALTZ, NY — The women’s basketball hosted Potsdam tonight and claimed a 74-56 victory. The Hawks advance to 13-5 on the season and 7-3 in SUNYAC, while Potsdam falls to 11-7 and 7-3 in conference.
The Hawks had four players finish in double figures, led by first year Artie Williams with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Carly Minehan finished with 13 points Nicole Sarcone added 11 points and eight rebounds, and Kristen Caban netted 10 points, including 7-8 from the charity stripe. Senior Sarah Salvo scored nine points and grabbed a career high nine rebounds.
"We weren’t perfect, but came as close to playing an intense 40 minutes as we have all season, which is what we have been stressing the last couple weeks," stated head coach Jamie Seward. "Nicole Sarcone was outstanding for us again, and she is proving she is one of the best point guards in the conference. In the second half, Chelsea and Carly really changed the entire flow of the game and it allowed us to take control – not to mention Artie and Sarah each played well all around games."
The game started slow with Potsdam up 5-4 with 14:30 remaining, before New Paltz went on 14-2 run over the next seven minutes to open the game. Potsdam out scored the Hawks 13-5 to close out the half with New Paltz up 23-20.
In the second half, New Paltz started with a 8-0 run to open their lead to 11 points. New Paltz led by as many as 19 with 5:19 remaining, but the Bears could only cut the deficit to 12, before the final 18 point margin.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Plattsburgh at 2:00 pm.
