Women’s Basketball Advances to Semifinals

NEW PALTZ, NY — The women’s basketball team advances to the SUNYAC semifinals with a 70-61 win over Potsdam Tuesday night in the quarterfinals. The #4 Hawks advance to 19-7 on the season will face #1 Brockport on Friday Feb. 29th at Brockport at 8:00 pm. Brockport beat New Palt in the teams only meeting this season with a 56-52 final score. The first semi-final game will be played in Brockport at 6 pm with the #2 seed SUNY Cortland facing the #3 seed SUNY Oneonta. The winners of both semi-finals will meet in Brockport at 4 pm on Saturday, March 1.
First year Artie Williams led the Hawks with 12 points on 6-7 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore Nicole Sarcone finished with 11 points and nine assists. Maggie Farrell posted a double-double with 10 points on a perfect 10-10 from the line and she hauled down 10 boards. Senior Sarah Salvo netted all nine of her points in the first half on 3-5 from the arc and Carly Minehan added nine points and seven rebounds.
The game was tied four times in the first half with the last coming at 12-12 with 13:13 remaining. The Hawks led 22-20 with 5:36 left, before going on an 8-2 run over the next 2:20 to take an eight point lead en route to the 36-27 margin at the intermission.
In the second half, Potsdam narrowed the gap to four points at 41-37 before the Hawks went on an 8-0 run, sparked by a Sarcone three pointer, to open the game. New Paltz maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half before the nine point final margin, after a Potsdam three pointer at the buzzer. New Paltz shot 42% from the floor compared to Potsdams 32.4%
