Women’s Volleyball Drops Two at SUNY/Liberty Challenge

SCHENECTADY, NY — The women’s volleyball team competed in day one of the SUNY/Liberty Challenge and lost their first two matches to Union and Clarkson.

UNION 3, NEW PALTZ 1
The Dutchwomen (17-6) came back after an opening game defeat to improve to 17-6. Union won by scores of 28-30, 32-30, 34-32 and 30-26. Junior middle hitter Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) had 17 kills, three block solos and two block assists for the Union, and Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) had 10 kills, three block solos and three block assists. Jen Merrinder (Andover, MA) posted 45 assists and Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY) had 37 digs with Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) recording 12 kills. New Paltz fell to 18-7. Junior outside hitter Samathan Prudente (Huntington Station, NY) had 13 kills to lead the Hawks, and Katie Becofsky (Altamont, NY) had 30 assists with 18 digs. Amanda Brown (South Glens Falls, NY) led the squad with 24 digs and Kim Braga (Long Beach, NY) finished with 11 blocks and 12 kills.

CLARKSON 3, NEW PALTZ 2
Clarkson now stands 14-10 after defeating New Paltz in five games by scores of 30-23, 30-22, 24-30, 13-30 and 15-12. Freshman defensive specialist Alison Schroeder (Webster, NY) recorded a career high 32 digs for the Golden Knights. New Paltz (18-8) featured 44 assist and 16 digs from senior setter Katie Becofsky (Altamont, NY) and 20 digs from Amanda Brown (South Glens Falls, NY) while Kim Braga (Long Beach, NY) led the Hawks with 16 kills along with 11 digs.

The Hawks will return to action tomorrow when they face Skidmore at 10am and St. Lawrence at 2pm
