WOMEN’S TENNIS WINS 2007 SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIP
NEW PALTZ, NY — The women’s tennis team claimed the 2007 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tennis Championship held this weekend in Manlius, NY. The Hawks claimed three of the six singles flights and all three doubles flights on the way to winning their second consecutive championship.
New Paltz finished with 32 points as Geneseo was second with 29 points.
Junior Dana Lim defended her first singles title from a year ago by defeating Erika Pumple of Geneseos 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Liz Beirne won third singles for her first individual champion crown. Beirne beat Vivian Cheung of Geneseo 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Lyndsey Lovinger defeated Cailtin Sternberg of Geneseo at fourth singles 6-4, 6-4.
Junior Lindsey Trifiletti lost fifth singles to defending champion Anna Lehet of Geneseo 6-3, 7-6. At sixth singles, sophomore Kerri Serkes lost to Molly Dingly of Geneseo 7-5, 6-3.
In doubles action, Lim and Eri Yamakawa defeated Kristen Greiner and Erika Pumple of Geneseo in the semifinals 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). Head Coach Rob Bruley said it was one of the most exciting college tennis matches people have ever seen. In the finals Lim and Yamakawa faced Tiarra Garrow and Valerie Papi of Plattsburgh and won 6-0, 6-0. At number two doubles Beirne and Lovinger took on Morgan Dupell and Katelyn Rogers of Plattsburgh in the semifinals and won 6-1, 6-2 before defeating Cheung and Sternberg of Geneseo 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. The third doubles pair of Trifiletti and Stephanie Schara squared off against Ashley Sears and Leann Shaw of Oneonta in the semifinals and won 6-3, 6-3. In the finals they faced Lehet and Allison Kornblatt of Geneseo and won 6-3, 6-4.
SUNY New Paltz receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament by winning the SUNYAC Championship.
Dana Lim won first singles and paired up with Eri Yamakawa to win first doubles.
Liz Beirne claimed third singles and teamed up with Lyndsey Lovinger to win second doubles.
Lyndsey Lovinger won fourth singles and paired up with Beirne in second doubles.
