Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Wildcats 1-0

UTICA, NY — Senior Justin Thompson’s header 10 minutes into the game held up as New Paltz (2-10-1, 2-5-1 SUNYAC) edged SUNYIT (3-11, 0-8 SUNYAC), 1-0, in men’s soccer in Utica, N.Y.
New Paltz got the lone tally of the game at 10:13 of the opening half when Joe Rose sent a long cross into the box from the left side. Thompson, who was unmarked on the far post, was there to knock it in for a 1-0 Hawk lead.
In the second half, the Hawks were outshot 9-2, but goalkeeper Patrick Carlucci and the New Paltz defense denied everything that was put on goal.
With just over six minutes left SUNYIT’s Conor McGuigan collected the ball inside the 18-yard box, made a move around a defender, and rifled a low shot that eluded Carlucci. Hawk defender Ryan Lundgren, however, was on the far post to clear the ball off the line and keep it 1-0.
Carlucci finished the game with six saves to earn his first career shutout.
The Hawks travel to Morrisville on Saturday to face the Mustangs at 1 p.m.
