Softball Falls to Chicago and Plymouth State
CAPE CORAL, FL — The SUNY New Paltz Hawks softball team continued play in Cape Coral, FL today and fell to the University of Chicago 13-1 and Plymouth State 1-0.
Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and continued to build from there. They scored one in the third and fourth, followed by two in the sixth. Chicago tallied eight runs in the top of the seventh to take the 13-0 lead.
The Hawks only score of the game came in the seventh inning when Joelle Von Bischoffhausen doubled down the left field line, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Victoria Kyle singled to right center to send Von Bischoffhausen home.
Amalia DiTrapani went two of three from the plate and VonBischoffhaussen hit two for two. Junior Michelle Reinke took the loss on the mound, allowing 15 hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
In the second game, the Hawks faced Plymouth State and lost 1-0. It was a scoreless game until the top of the seventh when Plymouth State hit a homerun to start the inning. The Hawks followed in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on base but couldn’t come any closer. O’Hea allowed took the loss on the mound, allowing three hits, one walk and recording eight strikeouts. Melyssa Cilmi went one of three from the plate and Erin Fitzpatrick collected the other hit, pinch hitting for Allison Ferullo in the seventh. The Hawks return to action on Sunday morning when they face Union and Colby.
