New Paltz Defeats Ramapo and Polytechnic
MAHWAH, NJ — The SUNY New Paltz Hawks claimed two victories today to advance to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. The Hawks faced off against Ramapo in the first match and claimed a 3-0 sweep. New Paltz put down 14 kills on 25 attempts with three errors hitting, .440 to go up one game to none on Ramapo, 30-21. Joshua Spiro and Christopher Holden each recorded four kills for the Hawks while Matthew Weingarten dished out 12 assists.
Ramapo dropped game two to the Hawks after Jeff Lee put down five kills leading New Paltz to a 30-26 victory. Weingarten dished out 11 assists and Lee led the defense with three digs. New Paltz went 13-30 with six errors, .233.
The Roadrunners fought back from behind in game three but fell short, 31-33. In game three, Lee led the Hawks with seven kills and Weingarten dished out 18 assists while the team posted 19 kills on 39 attempts with eight errors, .282. Ramapo hit 22-40 with eight errors going .350 in the loss.
On the day, the Hawks were led by Lee with 14 kills and Holden added nine of his own. Weingarten dished out 41 assists in the win. The team went 46-94 with 17 errors hitting .309.
In second match of the day, New Paltz faced off with Polytechnic in the second match of the day posting a 3-2 (30-32, 30-20, 30-23, 26-30, 15-4) victory to improve to 5-1 overall, 3-1 NECVA Metro. The Hawks hit .248 in the win behind Michael O’Brien’s 13 kills and three blocks. Jacob Moore posted 12 kills and Michael Fink added ten of his own. Mark Blair recorded ten kills in the win and rookie setter Stephen Pendleton dished out a team high 32 assists. Moore and Pendleton recorded seven blocks each.
SUNY New Paltz will return to action on Wednesday February 7th when they host Bard at 7 p.m.
