New Paltz Falls to Vassar 8-1, Hawks Look Toward SUNYAC Championship

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Vassar College on Wednesday.
Jennifer Larson (Port Jervis, NY) was the loan winner for the Hawks at fourth singles. Larson defeated Krista Romita (Baltimore, MD) 6-3, 7-5 to remain unbeaten on the season.
Debbie Sharnak (East Brunswick, NJ) downed Dana Lim (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) 6-1, 6-0 at first singles as Kelly Graham held off Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester, NY) at second singles 6-1, 6-0.
The Brewers continued to dominate at third, fifth and sixth singles. Liz Beirne (Moriches, NY) fell to Nicole Pontee (Flossmoor, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) in a 6-0, 6-1 match. Katherine Ketigian (Garden City, NY) and Kerri Serkes (Massapequa, NY) fell to Elysa Kliman (Toronto, ONT) and Kelly Barnett (Toronto, ONT), respectively.
The Brewers claimed all three doubles matches led by Sharnak and Graham in first doubles over Lim and Yamakawa 8-2.
New Paltz will be competing in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, NY this Friday-Sunday. In 2005, the Hawks finished in second place, three points behind Cortland. The Hawks saw all players in singles and doubles advance into the championship match.
Lim captured the SUNYAC crown at number two singles in 2005 and hopes to make a run for the title at first singles. New Paltz is hoping to reclaim the SUNYAC team title they won in 2002.
Vassar will continue their 2006 campaign on October 7th and 8th at St. Lawrence University for the Liberty League Championship.
