Hawks Soar Past Wildcats, 3-0
KINGSTON, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer hosted the SUNYIT Wildcats Wednesday night at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, NY and came away with their first SUNYAC win of the 2006 campaign. The 3-0 win also snapped a seven game losing skid.
Thirty-one minutes into the game the Hawks were awarded a corner kick. Off the corner kick senior Daniel Cocciardi (Stormville, NY/John Jay) managed to get a foot on the ball but it was deflected off the chest of Wildcat keeper Andy Korhun. The deflection hit off a SUNYIT player and rebounded into the net to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, which would carry to half time.
Senior Greg Foss (Queensbury, NY/Lake George) tallied his first goal of the season at the 68:05 mark with a lower shot to the left corner off a feed from Jose Reyes (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy). Reyes was back in the action in the 86th minute when he found Frank Gurreri (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) on the right side of the field who one touched the ball and sent it to the upper left corner for the final score.
Masanori Hotta (Kawanishi, Japan) the first shutout on the season making four saves for the Hawks. Korhun finished with seven saves.
New Paltz (3-11-1, 1-7-1 SUNYAC) hosts Wells in a non-conference matchup on Sunday, October 22nd at Alumni Field at 1:00pm. The eleven seniors will be recognized for their contribution to the program before the start of the game.
