Hawks Split Doubleheader With St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

PATCHOHUE, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team earned a split with St. Joseph’s (L.I) to advance to 5-5 on the year. The Hawks dropped the opener 2-1, before evening the score with a 9-4 triumph to close out the afternoon.

Sophomore pitcher Jimmy Donohue (Deer Park, NY) held St. Joseph’s (1-2) scoreless until they managed to take a one-run advantage in the bottom of the sixth. Senior catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) tied game one knocking in junior utility fielder George Perry (Port Jervis, NY) during the Hawks’ half of the seventh inning. Junior first baseman Joseph Armenio (Dix Hills, NY) provided the Golden Eagles with the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh to steal the 2-1 win.

Donohue allowed six hits, two runs, walked three and struck out four in the loss for SUNY New Paltz (5-5). Gutes went 2-for-4 with the RBI to lead the Hawks’ offense.

SUNY New Paltz posted a 9-4 victory in the second game to earn the split. Freshman pitcher Tristan Greene (East Hampton, NY) earned his first win of 2006 in a relief appearance. The Hawks rallied from a 4-3 deficit with six runs in the seventh to pull out the 9-4 win. Gutes, senior outfielder Bill Kelts (Waterford, NY), junior third baseman John DeKams (King’s Park, NY) and sophomore outfielder Jeff Stith (Selden, NY)each had two hits. Junior pitcher Greg Campo (Staten Island, NY) got the start, he allowed two runs in the first five innings.

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will travel to Florida for a week of competition, March 19-23, against such schools as Principia College, Grinnell College, Earlham College and the College of Mount St. Vincent.
