The SUNY New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Team Wins a Pair At Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ — The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team defeated conference rival Ramapo College 3-1 this afternoon. The Hawks took the first game 30-26, the second 30-21, lost the third 21-30, and won the fourth 32-30 to pick up their third conference win of the year.

SUNY New Paltz (5-2, 3-1) received stellar play once again from freshman setter Matt Weingarten (East Moriches, NY) with 50 assists and six digs. Senior opposite Ryan Bullard (Smithtown, NY) tallied 14 kills, 11 digs, and three aces. Senior outside hitter Jamie Kellogg (Scio, NY) had 19 kills and seven digs while junior middle back Josh Spiro (Isloand Park, NY) collected three service aces in the win for the Hawks. As a team, the Hawks achieved a .273 hitting percentage, including a .316 performance in game one and a .359 performance in game four.

Ramapo (7-1, 2-1) struggled throughout the match and posted a .212 hitting percentage. Sophomore opposite J Steinhauer (West Windsor, NJ) gave Ramapo their top showing with 10 kills, 17 digs, and a .400 hitting percentage for the Roadrunners.

The Hawks followed up their defeat of Ramapo College with a 3-0 sweep of Brooklyn College. SUNY New Paltz took the first match 30-21, the second and third 30-20 for the win.

Weingarten continued his strong play for the Hawks with 14 assists, a service ace, and two digs in the match. Freshman opposite Jason Chandler (Spencerport, NY) had a standout performance with 10 kills, two service aces, and five digs in the victory for the Hawks.

Brooklyn College (0-1) was led by junior middle hitter Luke Haywood (Brooklyn, NY) who had seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Michael Giordando (Brooklyn, NY) helped the defensive efforts of Brooklyn College with seven digs in the loss.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team returns to action when they host Bard College on Wednesday February 8, at 7:00 pm.
