SUNY New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Spilts In First Day at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team split their first two matches this evening at the Nazareth Tournament. The Hawks fell to the hosting Golden Flyers in the their early match by a final of 3-1 (21-30, 30-24, 24-30, 25-30), before defeating Villa Julie College 3-0 (30-28, 30-21, 30-24) in the later match.

SUNY New Paltz (8-3), ranked 11th in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Poll, dropped only their third match of the 2006 season to, 13th ranked, Nazareth College (6-3). Senior outside hitter Jamie Kellogg (Scio, NY) led the Hawks with ten kills, while collecting seven digs. Sophomore libero Pedro Medina (Brentwood, NY) totaled ten digs on the evening, while freshman setter Matt Weingarten (East Moriches, NY) tallied 30 assists and seven digs for SUNY New Paltz. Senior opposite Ryan Bullard (Smithtown, NY) recorded three blocks in the loss.

In their later match the Hawks defeated Villa Julie (3-2) in three straight games to earn their eighth win of 2006.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team will continue play at the Nazareth Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, February 11, against Wentworth in a 10:00 am affair.
