BUFFALO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz swim teams completed the second preliminary session of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Meet, this morning.
Sophomore John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) finished as the top qualifier in the men’s 400-yard individual medley (4:18.39), freshman Chris Smith (Suffern, NY) also qualified in the event (4:25.48).
The women’s team qualified six swimmers in the 100-yard breaststroke and four in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Regina Davide (Ossining, NY) (1:09.21), sophomore Laura Lipp (St. James, NY) (1:09.28), freshman Joelle Hopf (Vestal, NY) (1:11.09), freshman Erica Ellis (Barneveld, NY) (1:11.14), junior Christina Magill (Paughquag, NY) (1:13.08), and junior Beth Ann Salter (Long Beach, NY) (1:17.78) each qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke. Ellis (1:02.45), sophomore Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY) (1:01.45), and freshmen Eryka Eikeseth (Staten Island, NY) (1:06.31) and Jena Leibowitz (Wayne, NJ) (1:09.23) each qualified in the 100-yard butterfly. Freshman Samantha Graham (West Islip, NY) (1:03.00), junior Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY) (1:03.03), junior Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) (1:03.16), and junior Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) (1:03.76) qualified in the 100-yard backstroke.
The men’s team qualified two swimmers in each the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Jeff Melton (Acworth, GA) (55.14) and freshman Mark Chipman (Oswego, NY) (57.33) each qualified in the 100-yard butterfly while sophomore Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY) (1:00.79) and junior Danny Lo (Toms River, NJ) (1:03.15) finished with qualifying times in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams qualified one swimmer in the 200-yard freestyle and a team in the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) finished with a time of 1:58.48, while freshman Chad Santa Maria (Rexford, NY) touched in 1:51.01 in the 200-yard freestyle. In the 200-yard medley relay, Delia, Magill, Ellis, and Hopf combined for a 1:56.38 for the women’s team. Sophomore Dan Roth (Bordentown, NJ), Johnson, Chipman, and sophomore Brendan Lown (Bohemia, NY) swam a 1:42.61 for the men.
Sophomore Ashley Grant (Glens Falls, NY) (5:05.16) and freshman Christina Corrigan (Buffalo, NY) (5:12.30) both qualified in the women’s 400-yard individual medley, as freshman Kevin Kent (Beacon Falls, CT) (58.89) qualified in the 100-yard backstroke.
All qualifiers for the SUNY New Paltz swim teams will compete in the final heats for their respective events in session four of the SUNYAC Championship Meet at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center, located on the campus of Erie Community College, beginning at 6:00 pm.
