Bullard, Weingarten Merit NECVA Weekly Awards

MAHWAH, NJ — The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team had two players earn North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) weekly awards for the week ending Sunday, February 12. Following a win at home versus Bard College and a 3-1 performance at the Nazareth Tournament, senior opposite Ryan Bullard (Smithtown, NY) and freshman setter Matt Weingarten (East Moriches, NY) garnered the Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week Awards for the NECVA Metro Division.

Bullard earned Player of the Week honors for his part in the Hawks’ 4-1 week. Bullard collected over 60 kills in five matches this week, including a 16-kill performance against Bard College and a double-double against D’Youville, 25 kills and 14 digs. In the Hawks’ opening game of the Nazareth Tournament, Bullard needed only one game to collect 10 kills, while playing errorless volleyball and finishing the contest with a .769 hitting percentage. Bullard completed the week with 11 aces to raise his season total to 31; he is currently averaging .69 aces per game.

Weingarten has begun his career at SUNY New Paltz by setting the tempo for this year’s men’s volleyball team. Following the Nazareth Tournament, Weingarten was recognized with the NECVA Metro Division Rookie of the Week Award. Weingarten tallied 138 assists over the Nazareth Tournament, averaging 10.6 assists per game. Weingarten began and finished the week strong. Against Bard College, Weingarten recorded 41 assists, three aces and two blocks. To finish the week, he achieved a season-high in assists with 57, while adding seven digs and five blocks.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team will host a tri-match this Saturday, February 18, with Hilbert and, conference rival, Polytechnic on the schedule.
