SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Fall At Home To Lakers

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team fell to conference rival Oswego this evening by a score of 70-39. The Hawks drop to 2-5 in the conference and 6-8 overall, while the Lakers improve to 5-2 in conference play and 9-4 overall.

Oswego (9-4, 5-2) opened the evening with a 22-4 run forcing the Hawks into three early timeouts. The Lakers shot 57.7 percent from the floor to build a twenty-point, 38-18, lead at halftime. The Hawks, on the other hand, shot only 23.1 percent from the field in the first half. Junior forward Jessica Tremblay (Colonie, NY) totaled five points and four rebounds in the opening period. She was supported by her teammates off the bench. Sophomores forward Jessica Collins (Pittsford, NY) and guard Samantha Driscoll (Lisle, NY) combined with freshman forward Katie Kehn (Troy, NY) to provide the Lakers with 17 points off the bench, on seven-of-ten shooting from the field. The Lakers entered halftime with 21 total bench points. The Hawks were paced in the first half by sophomore forward Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) and junior forward Kristin Jackson (East Islip, NY), who each recorded four points and four rebounds.

SUNY New Paltz (6-8, 2-5) was unable to cut into the Lakers’ twenty-point halftime lead and finished the affair shooting only 21.3 percent from the field. Sohns was the top performer for the Hawks with nine points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Toni Marie Caserta (Levittown, NY) added eight points and four rebounds, while junior guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) pitched in with a career-high, eight steals. Tremblay led the Lakers with nine points, on four-of-five shooting, and six rebounds. Oswego continued their hot shooting, finishing the night at 63.8 percent in field goals.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will host conference rival Geneseo tomorrow, January 21 at 2:00 pm.
