Fredonia Hands SUNY New Paltz Women Second Straight SUNYAC Loss
FREDONIA, NY — Junior guard Jenny Driscoll (Staten Island, NY) led SUNY New Paltz with 11 points and four rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks fell to Fredonia 61-49.
After trailing by as many as ten points late in the second half, Driscoll hit two clutch three-point baskets to help the Hawks cut the Blue Devil lead to four with 2:16 remaining in the game. Junior forward Kristin Jackson (East Islip, NY) cashed in with eight points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Sarah Salvo (Manorville, NY) netted six points in only 21 minutes of play for SUNY New Paltz. Sophomore guard Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) pitched in eight points in 20 minutes of play. Fredonia connected on 14-of-18 free throws, including six in the last 50 seconds to keep the Hawks rally at bay.
Fredonia (8-4, 3-2) jumped out early lead in the game, opening up a 32-17 advantage with 5:33 remaining in the first half. SUNY New Paltz (5-7, 1-4) was out rebounded by the Blue Devils, 46-37, including 15 offensive boards. Fredonia took a 38-23 lead into halftime behind the efforts of sophomore forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville, NY). Kindzia provided the Blue Devils with 25 points and 13 boards in the win. Sophomore forward Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford, NY) gathered 13 points, three assists, and four steals for Fredonia. Junior guard Karolyn Baker (Olean, NY) chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.
The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will play their next contest on Tuesday, January 17, when they travel to conference rival Brockport at 6pm.
