SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Compete in ECAC Championship

SYRACUSE, NY — The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams competed at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament last night on the campus of Le Moyne College.

Junior Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY), freshman Joelle Hopf (Vestal, NY), sophomore Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY), and senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) swam to a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.84. The women?s B relay team consisting of freshman Jena Leibowitz (Wayne, NJ), sophomore Laura Lipp (St. James, NY), freshman Erica Ellis (Barneveld, NY), and junior Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) failed to earn the Hawks points, but finished with a time of 1:58.31.

The women?s team had four swimmers compete in the 1650-yard freestyle, freshman Nicole Moss (Williamsville, NY) finished in eighth place with a time of 9:29.73. Sophomore Ashley Grant (Glens Falls, NY) swam to an eleventh place finish with a final time of 19:36.49,freshman Christina Corrigan (Buffalo, NY) received a time of 19:37.97 collecting a twelfth place finish, and junior Beth Griffin (Watervliet, NY) took a nineteenth place finish with a time of 21:17.57 for SUNY New Paltz.

The men swimming team swam to a sixth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Johnny Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY), sophomore Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY), senior Jeff Melton (Acworth, GA), and sophomore Brandon Lown (Bohemia, NY) finished with a time of 1:45.24. The B relay team for the Hawks consisting of freshman Chris Smith (Suffern, NY), junior Danny Lo (Toms River, NJ), freshman Marc Chipman (Oswego, NY), and sophomore Mike Demerest (Long Beach, NY) completed the race with a time of 1:48.18, although they did not collect any points for SUNY New Paltz.

The men?s team had two swimmers in the 1650-yard freestyle. Freshman Chad Santa Maria (Rexford, NY) finished sixteen with a time of 18:24.61 and freshman Kevin Kent (Beacon Falls, CT) finished twentieth with a time of 19:06.34.
