SUNY New Paltz Swimming Grabs Two First Place Finishes at ECAC

SYRACUSE, NY — The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams completed this morning’s session at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Meet with two first place finishers. Senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) swam to a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.85 and junior Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) took first in the 200-yard Backstroke with the top time of 2:15.62. The men’s swimming team received a sixth place finish from junior Danny Lo (Toms River, NJ) in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.59. The men’s team also collected a fifth place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay with sophomore John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY), freshman Chad Santa Maria (Bordentown, NY, freshman Kevin Kent (Beacon Falls, CT), and freshman Chris Smith (Suffern, NY) combining to finish in 7:52.27.

The women’s team finished the morning session with a score of 211, in third place, trailing only New York University and conference rival Geneseo in team points. Junior Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY) followed Delia in the 200-yard backstroke in fourth place with a time of 2:17.62. Sophomore Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY) swam a 2:17.75 in the 200-yard butterfly, good for a ninth place finish. Freshman Joelle Hopf (Vestal, NY) took third in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing in 2:35.26. Two other Hawks joined Hopf among the top ten finishers in the event, sophomores Laura Lipp (St. James, NY) and Regina Davide (Ossining, NY) finished 8th (2:39.28) and 9th (2:41.15), respectively. Davide would later join Delia, Masterson, and Ruggiero to seize a second place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 8:17.59.

The men’s team completed the morning session in sixth place out of eleven teams with 78 points. Fleckenstein provided the Hawks with a 12th place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.26), Smith finish 20th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.92), and Santa Maria came in 27th in the 100-yard freestyle (51.32).
