Women’s Volleyball Captures Second Place at ECAC Tournament

ELMIRA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team competed at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament with an impressive second place finish. Last year the Hawks, seeded fourth, lost in five games to fifth-seeded Elmira in the opening round of the ECAC Upstate Tournament. With their second place finish, the SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team surpassed last year’s result by two rounds.

In the semifinal round, number two seed SUNY New Paltz met the number three seed St. John Fisher College. The Hawks took the first game 30-24, the second 32-30, and the third 36-34. Sophomore setter Katie Becofsky (Altamont, NY) tallied thirty-three assists, and thirteen digs while senior middle hitter Christina Mazurowski (Tonawanda, NY) had nine kills and eight blocks. Senior outside hitter Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point, NY) recorded ten kills and eighteen digs in the win.

With the victory, the Hawks advanced to the ECAC Championship where they met the number one seed University of Rochester. SUNY New Paltz got off to a rough start falling 28-30, but the Hawks battled for the win in game two 30-21. The University of Rochester swept games three and four by a score of 30-22.

Kaiser paced the Hawks with fourteen kills, fifteen digs, and five blocks. Mazurowski tallied ten kills, five blocks, and nine digs, while junior right side Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY) totaled nine kills and an impressive twenty-one digs. Setter Becofsky once again lead the attack for SUNY New Paltz with thirty-one assists and thirty digs propelling the Hawks to a second place finish in the ECAC Tournament.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team completes their season with a 29-12 record.
