SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Seizes Third Place at Drew
MADISON, NJ — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team pulled to 1-1 on the year with a 73-60 defeat of St. Joseph’s College in the Rose City Classic Consolation Game. With the victory the Hawks grabbed a third place finish at Drew University.
SUNY New Paltz (1-1) jumped out to a 33-22 lead in the opening half behind the play of sophomore guard Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY). Sohns dropped 14 points on the Lady Bears while pulling down 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Freshman guard Jasmine Scheffel (Oakland, MD) helped, providing the Hawks with a double-double off the bench with 13 points and ten rebounds. Scheffel also converted nine-of-eleven from the free throw line to drive the Hawks to victory. In only 14 minutes on the floor, senior center Alexandria Cruse (Poughkeepsie, NY) snatched nine rebounds while tallying 12 points on the offensive end.
Despite four players finishing in double figures, St. Joseph’s College (1-2) could not make up the difference in the second half. Sophomore guard Annamarie Ciorciardi (Archbishop Molloy) led the Lady Bears with 14, junior center Desiree DeJesus (Christ the King) registered 11 points, senior guard Michelle Softy (Christ the King) and junior forward Lynette Reyes (Christ the King) each totaled ten points in the loss.
The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will travel on Tuesday, November 22 to play Mount St. Mary at 7:00 pm.
